Report on the death of Fr. Francis Madhu

Dear Fr. General,

Greetings from the SVD Philippine Northern Province.

This is to inform you about the tragic death of Fr. Fransiskus Madhu, SVD, an Indonesian national who is a member of the Society of the Divine Word. He is 31 years old and a native of Flores, Indonesia. He was assigned as Co-Pastor of Lubuagan Catholic Mission Station in Kalinga, Apayao.

Fr. Madhu was shot dead while preparing for his Palm Sunday mass around 5:30Pm. in Barangay Mabungtot, Lubuagan, Kalinga. The suspect identified as Nestor Wailan fired at him at close range with an M-16 rifle. Fr. Madhu suffered five bullet wounds in his lower abdomen and side. Police reports said that the suspect who was with three companions during the shooting fled after the incident. Any kind of motive could not be established. It was a spur of the moment senseless action of a lawless person wanted by the law for previous crimes.

The life he shared during his short stay with us will be remembered and cherished forever. His body is now in Villa Cristo Rey at the Christ the King Mission Seminary compound. The funeral mass is scheduled at 3:00 in the afternoon of Easter Monday at the Shrine of the Divine Word – Christ the King.

May the soul of our departed confrere Fr. Fransiskus Madhu rest in peace.

Thank you for your prayers and condolences.

Very truly yours,

Fr. Jerome Adriatico, SVD
