Dear Bishops and Friends,

1. 37th Independence Day Celebrations went very well throughout the country. In Port Moresby and some other centres, it was a 4-day celebration as it was a long week-end. There was a real sense of Nationhood with most of the people wearing black and red (colours of the national flag). Jack Pidick Park was filled with people for the celebration. Kids were seen proudly carrying flags. There were church services, traditional dances, sporting competitions, family BBQ etc.

2. 2012 Independence Day Anniversary Honours list was announced and here are some notable people: - Honourable Leo Dion, Deputy Prime Minister (Grand Companion of the Order of Logohu with the title of “ Chief”); Honourable Peter Ipatas, Governor of Enga (Grand Companion of the Order of Logohu with the title of “ Chief “); Fr. Joseph Nene Sakite, SVD (for the service to the Catholic Church and the community – Officer of the Order of Logohu (O.L); Fr. Lawrence Tanu, Vicar General of Wewak diocese (for the service to the Catholic Church and the community (National Logohu Medal); Mr.Benny Rayappan, Present Principal of Sogeri National High School (for service to Education and National High School (Member of the Order of Logohu (M.L).

3. Priests’ Retreat was held in Emmaus Conference Centre, DBTI, Port Moresby 18-25 Sept. 37 Priest-representatives from most of the dioceses of PNG attended it. Bp.Rochus Tatamai and Bp.Arnold Orowae gave the talks. The Theme of the Retreat was: Communio: Journeying to the Father”. It was organized by the CBC-PNG/SI.

4. Meeting of the Catholic Professionals was held in Holiday Inn on Saturday, 22nd Sep. Around 100 professionals attended it and they were: Members of Parliament, Public Servants, Doctors, Nurses, Lecturers, Teachers, Lawyers, Accountants, Engineers, Managers, Administrators, Office Workers, Owners of companies etc. Grand Chief Michael Somare and Honourable Daniel Mona, MP, Bp.Bernard Unabali of Bougainville, Bp.Rochus Tatamai of Bereina were present. Mr.Paul Harricknen was the M.C and gave the overview of the meeting while Fr.Victor Roche, SVD the General Secretary gave a Power Point Presentation about the “why”, “ aims” and “future” of the “Catholic Professionals”. A team of 5 members will meet and come up with suggestions.
