1. Fr. Felix J. - MANY VICTIMS IN TAMILNADU WERE CATHOLIC

Fr. Felix J., the National JPIC coordinator for SVD Provinces in India wrote from Mumbai on Dec. 31:

"My family's home is in the Kanyakumari District of Tamilnadu and I went home just before Christmas to be with my ailing mother, to celebrate Christmas with her. As you know, the tragedy took place on 26th morning. I returned to Mumbai last night (30th December) and write to you now from there.

"One of the worst affected villages, Colachel, is only 5 km. from my home. Initially only the city of Chennai was affected. But later Nagapattinam of Tanjore diocese and the coastal villages of Kanyakumari District were affected. I went around the places. I am satisfied with the responses already offered by various groups, organisations. I was overwhelmed by the responses of people of all faiths.

"The affected people have been accommodated in various schools, churches, halls. Food is taken care of. Various agencies are pouring in food materials. Our province in Hyderabad has taken many steps to help the affected people. Fr.Lazar. G, the SVD Provincial, has already sent some of our priests to the affected areas. Confreres from Hyderabad, Chennai, Trichy and Vadipatty are already there, offering food, clothing and financial assistance to the needy. Many of these affected people have visited our shrine, Our Lady of Good Health, at Vadipatty. They recognise our priests. Fr.Lazar.G already has a plan to rehabilitate the children of this area.

"The affected people of Tuticorn and Kottar (Kanyakumari) dioceses are Catholics. In fact, everyone in the coastal villages of these two dioceses is a Catholic. These people do not own properties. They have their houses, boats, jewelry. And they have lost everything."

2. Sr. Mary John - SSpS RESPONSE TO THE ASIAN DISASTER

In response to an enquiry of Sister Agada Brand, our Congregational Leader, about the situation in Indonesia and India, we have received information from both our South India Province and from the Java Province. The reports both outline the situation following the Tsunami and the possible course of action.

Dear readers, if there is any news relating to this issue which involves our brothers, sisters, or priests, their families or acquaintances, please do not hesitate to keep each other informed, so that in some small measure we can express our concern and care through solidarity and support. All we can do is wonder, pray and take care of the casualties. True, what has happened transcends human comprehension in proportion and immensity, but life has its own zest and cannot easily be stifled as is evident in the human determination to build and plant once again.

3. Sr. Stefani - SSpS REPORT FROM JAVA PROVINCE

Sister Stefani Handayani, the SSpS Province leader from Java, Indonesia, gives the following news about situation there and the SSpS response:

"As of now the casualties have reached 80,000. Many more are unaccounted for. The survivors have lost their loved ones, their homes, and their properties leaving them feeling desperate and hopeless. We are praying for the victims and survivors, but did not act immediately because we wanted to be sure our help will reach the suffering.

"Now we can indicate some concrete steps we are taking:

"We are very grateful to the Lord that our sisters in Pangkal Pinang and Muntok are not affected by the tsunami since it is located away from the epicentre of the earthquake. The parents and nearest relatives of Sr. Valeria from Nias were saved because they lived far from the coast and could immediately flee the rushing waves, but all their homes and properties are lost. Please pray for them. Our other sisters and postulants from Sumatra are not affected either."

4. Sr. Sheela - SSpS REPORT FROM INDIA SOUTH PROVINCE

Sister Sheela Kochettonil, a councilor from India South Province, writes:

"We are still in the process of planning what can be done by us for the Tsunami victims. I spoke with Fr. Felix, the SVD JPIC coordinator for the SVD Mubai Province, who had been in one of the most affected areas. He said that at the moment they are getting enough food and clothing which are the immediate needs of the people. What we need to offer is help on a longer-term basis like education for the children, getting some fishing boats for the men, getting houses built, etc. To plan for this the SVDs are meeting in Andhra Pradesh and they have invited us too. So as a family we shall join in and collaborate in this. And we shall be grateful for your generosity. Sr. Nirmala Pushpam who is an MSc Nursing student has joined a team going from their college to Andaman and Nicobar Islands for relief work."
