On Sunday, 6 September, Fr. Anselmo Ribeiro, SVD, Superior General, officially opened the 30th edition of the Dei Verbum Course. First launched in 1987 as a joint venture of the Society of the Divine Word and the Catholic Biblical Federation, the course has since formed generations of ministers of the Word.

This year’s edition welcomes 23 participants from three continents — Asia, Africa and Europe. Among them are 13 SVDs, three priests and religious of other congregations, and seven lay participants.

The programme is intensive, combining academic lectures with communal and practical exercises. Its aim is to prepare ministers of the Word of God capable of teaching Scripture and of leading others into the depths of biblical revelation.

In the opening week, Fr. Cesar da Silva, SVD introduces the participants to the general study of Scripture, covering its formation, the canon, and biblical history. The course will continue for another seven weeks with study of biblical prophecy, methods of Bible sharing, Bibliodrama and the study of the Gospels and the Letters of Paul.
