Christmas Beyond the Crib: A Call to Justice, Peace, and Creation
Christmas, the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ, is far more than the remembrance of a past event. It proclaims a living faith: God enters human history, embracing its pain, hope, and brokenness. In a world marked by war, violence, injustice, and ecological destruction, the message of Christmas remains deeply relevant, especially in relation to Justice, Peace, and the Integrity of Creation (JPIC).
At the heart of Christmas lies the mystery of the Incarnation—God becoming human in Jesus. Christ is born not in power or privilege, but in poverty and vulnerability. This challenges systems of domination, greed, and exclusion that continue to fuel conflict today. The birth of Jesus affirms the dignity of every human life, particularly the poor, refugees, victims of war, and those on the margins. For Christians, Christmas is a call to recognize Christ in the suffering of our world and to respond with compassion, justice, and solidarity.
Christmas also reveals God as the Prince of Peace. The angels’ proclamation of peace on earth is not a passive wish but an active mission. In a world fractured by armed conflict, hatred, and violence, believers are called to be peacemakers. True peace, as shown by Christ, is rooted in justice, reconciliation, forgiveness, and respect for human dignity. Christmas challenges Christians to resist violence, foster dialogue, and work for just social structures.
For the Society of the Divine Word (SVD), Christmas is inseparable from its missionary identity. Proclaiming the Word made flesh means entering people’s realities with humility and compassion. Especially in conflict-ridden contexts, the SVD missionaries are called to be the signs of hope, healing, and reconciliation, standing with the oppressed and giving voice to the voiceless.
Finally, Christ’s birth affirms the goodness of creation, as God chooses to dwell within it. In the face of climate crisis and ecological injustice, Christmas calls Christians and SVDs to care for our common home, recognizing that care for creation is integral to justice and peace.
Thus, Christmas is not only a celebration, but a mission—an invitation to embody the light, hope, and transforming love of Christ in a wounded world.
