Laudato si, Care for our Common Home: A Grassroot Story

Richard Quadros SVD

The mission of eco-spirituality, environmental stewardship, and sustainability forms an essential dimension of the creative discipleship of the Divine Word Missionaries (SVD). Rooted in faith in the Divine Word, this mission understands care for creation not as an optional concern, but as a fundamental expression of Christian discipleship.

The Earth is recognized as God’s sacred gift, entrusted to humanity for responsible care and protection. Consequently, SVD disciples are called to safeguard life in all its forms, promote ecological justice, and adopt sustainable ways of living that respect the integrity of creation.

Eco-spirituality invites a contemplative relationship with nature, seeing creation as a revelation of God’s presence and love. Environmental stewardship flows from this spirituality, urging concrete actions that heal and protect our common home. Sustainability, in turn, ensures that present needs are met without compromising the rights of future generations. Together, these dimensions integrate spirituality, mission, and action, witnessing to the Divine Word by fostering harmony between humanity, creation, and God—especially in solidarity with the poor, who are most affected by ecological degradation.

As Divine Word Missionaries, there is a growing commitment to develop a comprehensive ecological strategy inspired by Laudato Si’. The 19th General Chapter clearly affirms the Congregation’s responsibility to respond creatively to the current socio-ecological crisis. It calls SVDs to deepen eco-spirituality and to act prophetically at a time when our common home is being severely threatened by climate change and environmental destruction.

Across the Provinces, Regions, and Missions (PRMs), many confreres are actively engaged in raising ecological awareness and promoting responsible action. These efforts involve parishioners, students, lay partners, associations, organizations, and both rural and urban communities. Through education, advocacy, and grassroots initiatives, SVDs seek to transform ecological awareness into lived commitment.

A concrete example of this creative discipleship can be seen in the SVD India–Mumbai Province (INM), where confreres not only promote ecological consciousness but also translate it into meaningful action. By honoring the principles of Laudato Si’, they embody an integrated approach that unites faith, justice, and care for creation. Such initiatives reflect the SVD mission to proclaim the Divine Word through a life that respects, protects, and renews God’s creation for the sake of present and future generations.
