The first Divine Word Missionaries arrived in Papua New Guinea in 1896. The SVDs work in the archdioceses of Port Moresby, Mt. Hagen, and Madang, and the dioceses of Wewak, Wabag, Kundiawa, and Goroka. In many of these places, the SVD missionaries were the founding fathers of the Catholic Church. Today, there are about 100 Divine Word Missionaries of 22 nationalities in Papua New Guinea. They include five bishops, seventy-two priests, seventeen brothers, and about ten young seminarians. They work in parishes, in education, and in specialized services.
