From Formation to Mission: The Spiritual Animator’s call

Thominraj Amalanathan, SVD

Having participated in the Arnold Janssen Spirituality training program for spiritual animators, I find that my experiences closely align with the anonymous saying: “To embark on a spiritual journey is to be open to the mystery of life, to surrender to the unknown, and to trust that every step is part of a greater plan.” This quotation aptly encapsulates the essence of chasing a spiritual path.

Our religious experiences serve as substances for spiritual growth, inviting us to engage in a continuous process of discernment, transformation, and steadfast commitment. Throughout this journey, we are called to give up the desire for control, to embrace uncertainty, and to trust that our lives are unfolding in accordance with a Divine plan.

The spiritual journey serves as our compass as missionaries, guiding us to welcome all people, regardless of their social background, religion, gender, language, or culture. While we continually face the challenge of responding authentically to the demands of the present time as true spiritual animators, the example of our pioneering missionaries continues to inspire and illuminate our own missionary path, especially in today’s increasingly globalized and intercultural world. Our mission is not limited to being mere carriers of faith; we are also called to be cultural mediators, building bridges between our own culture and that of the people among whom we serve. This responsibility challenges us to make our understanding and respect for diversity a tangible and credible witness within our communities. The key to fruitful intercultural mission lies in our openness and humility. We are invited to approach our work with a spirit of openness, a willingness to learn, and a deep respect for the richness of every culture. By engaging with, listening, and adapting to those around us, we not only enrich our own lives but also bear authentic witness to the Gospel in a world marked by diversity.

Enlightened by the life and spirituality of our Congregation, as handed down to us by our founder, St. Arnold Janssen, as well as by the lived example of our founding generation, I have been deeply moved to reflect on my own spiritual journey as a missionary. Undoubtedly, it is the impact of our unique spirituality that transforms me, enabling me to become living examples of love, grace, compassion, and hope in today’s world. This truth is clearly manifested in the lives of our founding generation. They continue to serve as role models and sources of inspiration in numerous ways through their faith, their commitment to mission, and their capacity for intercultural living. It is our responsibility and privilege to keep alive the flame they have kindled among us and throughout the world.

I consider myself profoundly blessed to have had the opportunity to venerate the spirit of our founder and to learn so much about his life and legacy. It was a privilege to experience, in a tangible way, what it means to walk upon the very ground where he and the founding generation once walked, to touch and breathe in the spirit of their mission. Indeed, every aspect of the surroundings eloquently speaks of the love and dedication of our founder, as well as that of the pioneering fathers, brothers, and sisters. Their missionary zeal continues to inspire me to remain committed and creative, to offer my very best, and to bring life and hope to a world in need of healing.
