1877: The Brothers and Their Role in the Development of the Society

The history of the Society of the Divine Word (SVD) brothers is closely tied to the growth of the congregation since its foundation by St. Arnold Janssen. While the SVD initially focused on training missionary priests, it soon became evident that lay brothers were essential in supporting the mission through manual labor, printing, and infrastructure development.

In May 1877, Janssen formally recognized their role by recording postulants in the Brüderbuch (Book of the Brothers), marking the beginning of the brotherhood within the congregation. Despite initial challenges, the number of brothers increased significantly, contributing to building mission houses, maintaining institutions, and spreading the Gospel through printed media. Their dedication and hard work were instrumental in shaping the identity and global expansion of the SVD.

Over time, the formation and role of the brothers evolved. They engaged in manual labor, technical training, and community life before entering the novitiate, where they took temporary vows dedicated to the Archangels and perpetual vows in honor of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary. Although their contributions were significant, they faced limitations, such as the lack of voting rights and leadership roles within the congregation. However, their involvement in printing mission magazines and fundraising efforts as “traveler brothers” ensured the congregation’s financial sustainability.

In modern times, their role has gained greater recognition, especially following the 1967 General Chapter, which granted them active and passive voice in decision-making. Pope Francis’ 2022 reforms further empowered them to assume leadership roles. Despite challenges such as aging members and declining vocations, the SVD brothers continue to play a crucial role in education, social work, and missionary outreach, embodying a legacy of prayer, service, and dedication to the Missio Dei.
