Generalate Leadership Holds Caucus and Spiritual Retreat in Nemi
GMD
Far from being a routine meeting, the caucus served as a space to listen to the signs of the times, reimagine the mission, and renew commitment to the congregation’s core values. Daily spiritual grounding through Bible sharing and Eucharist set the tone for honest conversations and collaborative planning.
The heart of the week focused on the future of the SVD mission in today’s changing world. Discussions centered around key areas such as formation, leadership, pastoral care, and emerging needs in local communities. A strong emphasis was placed on the integration of the four characteristic dimensions of the Society: Biblical Apostolate, Mission Animation, Justice and Peace & Integrity of Creation (JPIC), and Communication.
Fr. Wojciech Szypula, General Coordinator for the Bible Apostolate, shared how these dimensions work together to make the mission truly transformative. “They’re not separate departments,” he said, “but deeply connected aspects of who we are and what we do. Scripture gives us direction, mission animation inspires action, JPIC grounds us in justice, and communication helps us connect and stay relevant.” According to him, the goal is not just to work efficiently, but to witness prophetically and serve meaningfully in a fragmented world.
Throughout the week, guiding questions such as Who is left out? or What can be changed? invited participants to go beyond surface-level solutions and face root issues with courage and clarity.
The caucus concluded with a review of the plans projected through 2030 and an invitation to continue walking together in a spirit of discernment.
After the caucus, the group took part in a spiritual retreat, which began on the afternoon of July 6 and concluded on Friday, July 11. The retreat was led by Fr. Steve Bevans, SVD, and offered a space for prayer, silence, reflection, and spiritual renewal.
