A Gift That United a Parish: The New Tractor in Timbunke
Michael Donovan
Over the years, the parish grew under the guidance of S.Sp.S. Sisters, S.V.D. Brothers, and Fathers. It developed into a central hub for four neighboring parishes: Anboin, Kanengera, Chambri, and Kapamarie. The central parish, named after the local village, remains Timbunke. Located in the heart of the Middle Sepik region, the Society of the Divine Word has faithfully sowed the seeds of God’s Word here for generations.
I had the privilege of serving in Timbunke Parish for thirteen years. Did the Word of God truly take root? Perhaps the following story answers that question.
For several years, the parish had been in need of a new tractor. Recognizing this, Bishop Joe Roszynski mobilized his network back in Poland to raise the necessary funds. The response was swift and generous: in a short time, Bishop Joe received €92,000, enough to purchase a Massey Ferguson 290 four-wheel-drive tractor along with a grass cutter. The machinery was shipped and delivered to Timbunke Parish.
The day of its arrival turned into a joyful celebration. The villagers prepared with great enthusiasm, decorating the road, erecting a welcoming arch, and writing messages of gratitude. Nearly half the village, especially the youth, dressed in traditional attire. They danced alongside the tractor as it made its way to its new home. The entire community rejoiced, knowing that this tractor would greatly benefit everyone.
The new tractor had many purposes: clearing the grass on the airstrip, repairing local roads, pulling heavy trucks from muddy ditches, transporting building materials from the bush, and, of course, working the parish farm. It was a much-needed, multi-purpose machine. The arrival of the tractor not only improved infrastructure but also fostered a strong sense of unity and participation within the parish community.
I extend heartfelt congratulations and gratitude to Bishop Joe and the generous people of Poland. Their kindness brought more than just machinery—it brought hope, pride, and togetherness to the people of Timbunke.
