A New Dawn for Afrodescendants: Celebrating Heritage and Hope
On February 18, the vibrant city of Belo Horizonte, MG, became the stage for an event set to shape the future: the official opening ceremony for the Second International Decade of Afrodescendants (2025–2034), an initiative established by the United Nations.
Hosted by the Centro de Valores – Jupic at UniArnaldo, the ceremony embraced the stirring theme, “People of African Descent: Recognition, Justice, and Development.”
From the very start, the atmosphere buzzed with energy and pride. Leaders and community members gathered to honor the rich tapestry of Afro-Brazilian history, celebrating the resilience, identity, and spiritual legacy that have long defined the community.
Notable voices of guidance, including Father Marcelo from Casa do Divino Espírito Santo das Almas and Father Bruno from Terreiro São Miguel, delivered heartfelt messages that underscored the essential role of African-rooted religious traditions in nurturing social unity and combating intolerance.
The day unfolded with a symbolic procession that vividly captured the spirit of resistance and unity. This procession paved the way for moments of warm welcome, reflection, and inspiring dialogue—moments that also served as a prelude to the upcoming National Day of Traditions of African Roots and Candomblé Nations on March 21.
This future celebration promises to further affirm the value of preserving ancestral heritage and culture.
More than a formal event, the ceremony marked a renewed commitment by the organizers at Centro de Valores – Jupic to fortify public policies that promote racial equality, celebrate Afrodescendant culture, and defend the rights of the community.
As the day transitioned into an evening of faith and celebration, it was clear that the spirit of hope and determination was alive—propelling the promise of a more inclusive, equitable, and vibrant future for all.
