Holy Cross Parish community with Bibles on the Sunday of the Word of God.

Budiriro Faithful Rejoice in the Word of God through Liturgy, Symbols, and Renewal of Faith

Sunil Kerketa, SVD

On 25 January 2025, in communion with many other SVD-run parishes across Zimbabwe, the community of Holy Cross Catholic Church, Budiriro in Harare, gathered to celebrate the 7th Sunday of the Word of God under the theme: “Let the Word of Christ dwell in you” (Col 3:16). The celebration was preceded by a week of preparation marked by daily Biblical Adoration, which helped deepen prayerful reflection and openness to the Word.

The Holy Mass, animated by SVD lay partners, began with a creative entrance rite. At three designated stops, selected Bible verses were proclaimed, drawing the congregation more deeply into the meaning and centrality of Scripture in Christian life. This thoughtful gesture set a reverent yet joyful tone for the entire celebration.

During the solemn procession of the Bible, the congregation expressed their joy through singing and ululation, visibly manifesting their love and reverence for the Word of God. Symbolic offerings such as salt, oil, and flowers were presented at the altar, reminding the faithful of the transformative presence and power of God’s Word in their daily lives.

In a significant moment of communal commitment, the SVD lay partners led the congregation in a prayer pledging fidelity to the Word of God. This was followed by a lively Bible quiz designed to encourage greater engagement with Scripture and foster a deeper appreciation of its message.

The day was filled with prayer, reflection, and joyful participation, all centered on the living Word of God. As the celebration concluded, the community was invited to carry forward a challenging and personal question: How will we allow the Word of Christ to dwell more deeply in our lives?
