Caring for Creation Through Action in Kinshasa

Cinco Alejandro, SVD

In the context of the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation, the Common Formation Centre community (CFC), together with members of the SVD Lay Associates Cell at 12th Street in Kinshasa, took concrete action to care for their local environment.

Equipped with shovels, hoes, rakes, and brooms, participants cleared large quantities of plastic waste and household garbage from the drainage channel in front of the SVD property. The accumulated waste had obstructed the flow of rainwater, contributing to flooding during the rainy season.

More than a cleanup activity, the initiative sought to raise awareness about the shared responsibility of caring for creation. The improper disposal of waste points not only to challenges in waste-management systems but also to the need for greater respect for common spaces, public health, and the environment.

By working together, the CFC and SVD Lay Associates offered a visible example to neighboring residents and passers-by of how environmental responsibility can begin with simple actions in one’s own community.

The activity was coordinated by Fr. Charles Mwan’obe, SVD, JPIC Coordinator of the SVD Congo Province, as part of the Province’s commitment to promoting Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation (JPIC) through practical initiatives at the grassroots level.

The initiative carried a simple message: caring for creation begins with concrete actions. Protecting our common home requires not only awareness, but also responsible choices, a change of attitude, and the participation of everyone.
