Chilean Verbitas Renew Missionary Commitment at Annual Retreat
Amid the tranquil surroundings of Fundo Huaqui, Los Ángeles, the Divine Word Missionaries (SVD) of the Chilean Province gathered from January 20 to 25, 2025, for their annual retreat.
More than just a pause from their daily responsibilities, it was a time for deep prayer, reflection, and fraternity—a moment to reconnect with their missionary calling and find renewed strength for the journey ahead.
Leading the retreat was Bishop José Luis Corral, SVD, from the Diocese of Añatuya, Argentina, who set the tone with a solemn Holy Mass.
His reflections throughout the retreat challenged participants to move beyond routine service and embrace mission as a transformative experience rooted in faith, courage, and a listening heart.
He reminded them that spreading the Gospel requires more than good intentions—it demands an unwavering trust in God, especially in an ever-changing world.

A particularly moving presence was Fr. Luis Sieben, SVD, a 97-year-old missionary whose passion and energy stood as a testament to lifelong dedication.
His example inspired fellow missionaries to persevere with zeal, regardless of age or challenges.
During the retreat, Provincial Superior Fr. Yuventus Kota, SVD, likened the experience to the journey of the Prodigal Son—returning not in defeat, but in rediscovery.
He urged his confreres to see the retreat as an invitation to return to God’s presence, refuel their spiritual energy, and embrace their mission with fresh purpose.
The retreat also held special significance, marking 150 years since the founding of the Society of the Divine Word and 125 years of its presence in Chile.
These milestones were more than commemorations of history; they were a call to action—an invitation to honor the legacy of past missionaries by pressing forward with renewed dedication and faith.
Beyond reflection, the retreat was filled with moments of fraternity and celebration. A solemn Eucharistic celebration saw the Verbitas renew their vows of chastity, poverty, and obedience, reaffirming their lifelong commitment to God’s mission.

A spirited football match between Team Arnold Janssen and Team Joseph Freinademetz brought camaraderie to life, with even Bishop Corral and senior missionaries joining the fun.
The gathering concluded with a joyful barbecue, where laughter, storytelling, and gratitude filled the air—a fitting close to a retreat centered on renewal, faith, and brotherhood.
As the missionaries departed, they carried with them more than just memories—they left with a strengthened spirit, a deeper conviction, and a firm resolve to continue spreading the Gospel with authenticity, courage, and unwavering trust in God’s providence.
