Conversation with the Synodal Bishops: Reflections on Synodality and Inclusion in the Church

On October 23, SVD bishops Emmanuel Fianu, Edgardo Cedeño, and Cardinal Mons. Ladislav Német shared their synod experiences with the community of the Collegio Verbo Divino. Each of them highlighted how this experience has impacted them in different ways, though they all agreed that, throughout its 150 years of history, the Society of the Divine Word has naturally embodied the spirit of synodality. In this regard, they pointed to St. Arnold Janssen and Joseph Freinademetz as living examples of this tradition.

Synodality in the Church: A Path Toward Inclusion and Cultural Dialogue

Synodality emerges as a fundamental process for the future of the Church, paving the way toward intercultural openness and dialogue. In an increasingly interconnected world, the need to listen and learn from diverse cultures becomes evident. This approach not only enriches the life of the ecclesial community but also reflects the mandate of communion at the heart of the Christian message.

From its beginnings, the Society of the Divine Word has embodied synodality in its relationship with cultures. Its mission has been marked by deep respect for cultural diversity, understanding that each context brings unique and valuable perspectives to faith. This spirit of openness and dialogue has allowed the SVD to build meaningful connections with various communities, promoting mutual understanding that transcends differences.

The Challenge of Female Inclusion

One of the most significant challenges on this path of synodality is the role of women in the Church. As we move forward in this process of listening and openness, it becomes essential to recognize and value women’s voices in building a more inclusive community. The active participation of women is not only a sign of justice but also enriches dialogue and decision-making, reflecting the diversity of the Body of Christ.

A Future of Collaboration and Communal Discernment

The future of the Church envisions a horizon of greater openness, where centralization gives way to broader collaboration and communal discernment. This paradigm shift is not only desirable but necessary to face contemporary challenges. Synodality invites us to walk together, to listen to one another, and to create a space where all voices are heard and valued.

The Society of the Divine Word has lived synodality by recognizing that dialogue and communion are essential for an authentic mission. This approach is not only relevant within the Church but also offers a model for society at large: a call to build bridges rather than walls.
