Divine Word Missionaries Participate in National JPIC Meeting in Brazil
Jairo Godinho Guimarães, SVD
The meeting took place from February 27 to March 1 at the Dom Luciano House in Brasília, where representatives from various dioceses across Brazil and several religious congregations, including the Society of the Divine Word, gathered to reflect on human rights and the role of the Churches in the 2026 general elections.
Under the theme “Synodality and Prophecy to Strengthen Democracy in Brazil,” the meeting was marked by moments of prayer, reflection, and dialogue on topics such as economics, politics, socio-environmental issues, religion, and synodality. With the aim of strengthening Justice and Peace commissions in dioceses throughout Brazil, promoting human rights, and encouraging the election of candidates committed to the defense of life, a new national coordination team was elected. Fr. José Boeing, SVD, was chosen as one of the members of this collective leadership team.
Following this gathering, from March 1 to 3, the National Commission for JPIC of the CRB met to reflect on action strategies for Consecrated Religious Life (CRL).
The commission is composed of Sr. Michele da Silva, ICM (Mission Sector of CRB National); Sr. Rosa Helena Ciprés Díaz (Mission Sector of CRB National); Br. Jairo Godinho Guimarães, SVD (Southeast Region); Sr. Cláudia Chesini, CSC (Central-West Region); Sr. Samanta Karla de Sousa Carneiro, IFB (Southern Region); and Fr. José Boeing, SVD (Northern Region).
During the meeting, participants reflected on the vocation of Consecrated Religious Life as a prophetic sign of hope, called to recognize and promote prophecy within the Church and society through various forms of mission and service.
They also discussed the challenges of JPIC in the present context. Participants shared their missionary experiences across the five major regions of Brazil, prayed together, and celebrated the gift of their vocation as religious committed to promoting justice, peace, and care for creation.
The gathering was a fruitful moment of encounter and discernment. Participants recognized themselves as pilgrims on this journey, convinced that today more than ever the effectiveness of their mission depends on working in networks and strengthening collaboration among communities and ministries.
