Educating with Faith in the Age of Artificial Intelligence

In the context of rapidly advancing technology, Fr. Kasmir Nema, SVD, General Coordinator for Communication, visited the German School of the Divine Word in Los Ángeles, Chile, where he offered a reflection on the impact of artificial intelligence on education and human life from a Catholic perspective. He was joined by members of the school community, along with Frs. Aloysius Tamonob, SVD, and Leoneto Jesus Leto, SVD.

In his talks addressed to parents, students, and staff, Fr. Nema highlighted how AI is transforming the way people learn, think, and relate to one another—especially among children and young people, who increasingly use it to solve problems, understand content, and generate information.

He explained that the Church does not oppose technology, but calls for its responsible use, always placing the dignity of the human person at the center. He emphasized that, unlike artificial intelligence, human beings possess conscience, freedom, and moral responsibility, which enable them to discern between good and evil.

Fr. Nema also encouraged the cultivation of virtues such as honesty, responsibility, temperance, and prudence—essential for the ethical use of technology. He raised important questions about growing dependence on AI and the need for individuals to remain actively engaged in their own development.

In the field of education, he stressed that Catholic formation is holistic, encompassing intellectual, moral, and spiritual dimensions. He noted that AI presents both an opportunity and a challenge to human identity, and called for its integration into education without losing sight of fundamental values and the transcendent dignity of the person.

At the conclusion of his visit, Fr. Nema expressed his gratitude for the warm welcome extended by the school community, acknowledging the leadership of the rector and the presence of Frs. Tamonob and Leto. He said, “Thank you for welcoming me, accepting me, and allowing me to be part of your community.”
