First SVD ASPAC University Conference: A Landmark Celebration of 150 Years of Education and Community Service
Kupang, Indonesia – February 20, 2025 – The First SVD Asia-Pacific (ASPAC) University Conference officially opened on Thursday, February 20, 2025, at Universitas Widya Mandira (UNWIRA) in Kupang, Indonesia. The gathering marked a historic milestone in the 150-year journey of the Society of the Divine Word (SVD), bringing together scholars, educators, and leaders from SVD-administered universities across the region.
Held under the theme “SVD at 150: Catholicity and the Impact of SVD-Administered Universities on Communities,” the conference aimed to reflect on the transformative role of Catholic education in fostering intellectual growth, faith, and social responsibility.
A Sacred Beginning: Faith and Knowledge in Harmony
The event commenced with a solemn Eucharistic celebration at St. Hendrikus Ballroom, led by Fr. Ubaldus Djonda, SVD, Chairman of Yayasan Pendidikan Katolik Arnoldus (YAPENKAR), which oversees Catholic education in Kupang.
In his homily, Fr. Djonda emphasized gratitude for the gift of education, urging participants to see Catholic universities as beacons of faith, knowledge, and service. He invoked Pope John Paul II’s apostolic constitution, Ex Corde Ecclesiae (1990), highlighting that Catholic universities are not just academic institutions but communities committed to truth, human dignity, and cultural enrichment.

He also reflected on the principle of “Ratio et Fides” (Reason and Faith)—the foundation of Catholic education—which seeks to integrate intellectual excellence with faith and humanitarian values.
A Gathering of Visionaries: The Conference Officially Opens
Following the Mass, the conference was officially inaugurated in the grand hall of UNWIRA, where a spirit of unity and purpose filled the air. Leaders, scholars, and delegates from various SVD-administered universities came together to exchange ideas and reaffirm their commitment to holistic education.
In his welcome address, Fr. Philipus Tule, SVD, Rector of UNWIRA, warmly greeted the participants, acknowledging their shared mission. He spoke passionately about the role of Catholic universities in shaping not only the minds but also the hearts of students—ensuring that education remains deeply rooted in faith, service, and a commitment to the common good.
The conference was graced by distinguished academic leaders and delegates from various SVD institutions, including:
- Nanzan University (Japan)
- Fu Jen Catholic University (Taiwan)
- University of San Carlos (Philippines)
- Holy Name University (Philippines)
- Divine Word University (Papua New Guinea)
- Universitas Widya Mandira (Indonesia)
- Institute of Philosophy and Creative Technology (IFTK) Ledalero (Indonesia)
Their presence was more than ceremonial—it was a testament to the enduring bonds among SVD universities and their shared mission to educate, inspire, and serve.
Building Bridges Beyond Academia: Strengthening Bonds Through a Shared Mission
A traditional gong ceremony marked the official opening, its deep reverberation echoing the conference’s significance. The act symbolized new beginnings, collective purpose, and the rhythm of academic and missionary work across cultures and generations.
In a heartfelt moment of gratitude, Fr. Philipus Tule, SVD, presented tokens of appreciation to the six university presidents in attendance, symbolizing collaboration, leadership, and the unwavering mission of SVD-administered institutions.
The opening day concluded with a formal dinner, where conversations flowed freely, bridging cultures and experiences. Delegates exchanged stories of academic achievements, challenges, and aspirations for the future.
What began as an academic conference quickly transformed into a reaffirmation of a shared calling—to form individuals who are not only intellectually excellent but also compassionate and service-oriented.
As the conference unfolded, there was a growing sense of anticipation for the days ahead—a time for deep discussions, collaboration, and renewed commitment to using education as a tool for transformation.
The First SVD ASPAC University Conference is more than just an academic gathering; it is a milestone in the SVD’s 150-year legacy of empowering communities through education, faith, and service.
