IBP Donamon Community Celebrates Fr. Peter McHugh’s Diamond Jubilee

Timothy Lehane, SVD

On January 15, 2026, the Donamon Community gathered to celebrate a remarkable milestone in the life of Fr. Peter McHugh, SVD, marking the Diamond Jubilee of his priestly ordination. Fr. Peter was ordained at Techny on January 15, 1966, and sixty years later, his confreres came together to honor his vocation, his ministry, and six decades of faithful service to the Church and the Society of the Divine Word.

Sixty years of religious consecration and service is a truly wonderful anniversary in the life of any confrere. To mark six decades of ordination to the ministerial priesthood is not only an occasion to celebrate Fr. Peter’s journey, but also an opportunity to acknowledge the gift of our own vocations and the wider priestly vocation shared by all the baptized in the Church.

Together, the community offered its heartfelt thanks to Peter for a life marked by gratitude, holiness, wisdom, kindness, attentive listening, and genuine warmth — qualities that testify to the deep and lasting impact he has made within the SVD throughout his years of service and dedication. He has witnessed to the beauty of the priestly vocation through his international ministry in the Society and through the countless lives he has touched along the way. The community expressed how blessed they are to have him in the IBP today and how much they cherish his presence in their lives.

The celebration itself was filled with conversation, laughter, and a profound sense of community, reflecting the very spirit of priesthood that Fr. Peter has embodied throughout his ministry. Even in his semi-retirement at Donamon, he continues to share this celebrated pastoral quality with the IBP.

A special word of thanks was offered to Fr. Peter in recognition of his loyal and selfless service, together with warm congratulations on reaching such a significant milestone. Looking back on his 60 years of priesthood, the community did so with hearts full of gratitude and deep appreciation for the journey he has travelled. They also remembered his parents, classmates, and all those he has guided and encountered along the way in thought and prayer.
