Indonesia: Update on relief efforts for victims of Lewotobi volcano
Following the recent Lewotobi Volcano eruption, the JPIC SVD IDE Commission, in partnership with IFTK Ledalero and TRUK-F, has extended critical relief to affected communities. The eruption, which began on November 3, 2024, has severely impacted the surrounding areas, leaving families in need of basic resources and shelter. In response, an outpouring of donations and volunteer support has brought both financial and material aid to those displaced.
From November 4 to 12, contributions totaled Rp 801,716,623 in addition to substantial donations of essential goods, clothing, hygiene products, and sanitation supplies. These resources enabled JPIC SVD to distribute approximately 17 tons of rice and other necessities, prioritizing vulnerable groups such as women and children. In total, aid has reached 1,005 households, supporting 3,401 individuals across 33 villages affected by the eruption.
The distribution effort was made possible by 148 dedicated volunteers, including 101 seminarians from St. Paul Major Seminary in Ledalero, 35 students from IFTK Ledalero, and 12 youth volunteers from St. Joseph’s Parish in Ende. Together, they have worked tirelessly to manage the relief operation, which continues to expand in response to ongoing needs in the affected communities.
JPIC SVD continues to seek support to alleviate the burden on those impacted, expressing deep gratitude for the compassion and generosity shown by all who have contributed.
