Interculturality Course for New Missionaries in the Spanish Province
Djibril Jean Sanoussi, SVD
Among the topics covered were the history of Spain and the Province, as well as a range of cultural elements such as gastronomy, social life, popular religiosity, daily customs and communication styles.
Fr. Adolfo del Valle reminded everyone that “to love and serve a people, it is essential to know their history and identity,” and guided participants through the history of both the country and the Province.
Fr. Modeste Munimi highlighted the importance of communication as a fundamental element for missionaries in a new cultural context, especially for us, Verbitas. Appropriate and assertive communication allows us to connect with people, proclaim the Gospel effectively and adapt our relational style. He encouraged us to take language learning seriously, since language is essential for effective integration and mission in a new cultural context.
Fr. Pedro de Dios provided deeper insight into various practices, customs and expressions characteristic of Spain—elements that help one approach the culture without prejudice and with a positive attitude. Inculturation is also lived through beauty, art and music; for this reason, Fr. Herme Díez and Fr. Mateo Alejandro taught religious and popular songs from the country.
Likewise, Fr. Nico Espinoza and Fr. Manuel Gantir invited participants to reflect on sexual and financial abuse prevention protocols, reminding them of the responsibility and awareness demanded by our life and mission.
Overall, these were enriching days that not only fostered a deeper understanding of Spanish culture but also strengthened fraternal coexistence.
