Javierada 2025: A Pilgrimage of Formation, Discernment, and Missionary Commitment for OTP Students in Spain Province

On March 15, 2025,b five students from the Overseas Training Program (OTP) in the Spain Province took part in the Javierada, a traditional pilgrimage to the Castle of Javier in Navarra—the birthplace of Saint Francis Xavier, Patron of Missions. Joined by parish youth groups from SVD and SSpS communities in Spain and Portugal, the OTP students shared a day of spiritual renewal, fellowship, and missionary reflection alongside thousands of young pilgrims from across the country.

Embracing the Missionary Heart

For David Lapar from Congo, the Javierada was more than a physical journey—it was an opportunity for profound inner transformation, helping him rediscover the essence of missionary life:

“No one is born a missionary; one becomes a missionary. Confronting my doubts, fears, and anxieties made me realize that faith, love, patience, and service must nourish the missionary’s heart. Missionary work isn’t defined by titles or the number of parishioners, but by closeness and care for those entrusted to us by God. As Jesus says, ‘I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me’ (John 10:14).”

Walking Together in the Spirit of Lent

For Hoang Do from Chicago, the pilgrimage held special meaning during Lent, symbolizing a spiritual journey reminiscent of Christ’s path toward Golgotha:

“The cold and fatigue quickly faded in the face of the joy and hope we experienced. I’m deeply grateful for this journey, particularly for the companionship and shared faith within the group.”

Joyful Community and Spiritual Inspiration

Djibril Jean Sanoussi from Togo described his first Javierada as a deeply transformative experience filled with joy, unity, and renewed missionary zeal. He shared:

“Despite the cold weather, we joyfully arrived at the Castle of Saint Francis Xavier for the Eucharist celebrated by the archbishop, several bishops, and many priests. Reflecting on the Transfiguration, the archbishop encouraged us to share the joy inspired by Saint Francis Xavier with others.

Witnessing the Vitality of the Church

Brother Douglas Cruz from Brazil was particularly moved by the vibrant participation of young pilgrims, reflecting a dynamic and hopeful Church in Spain:

“I was touched by the numerous youthful faces during the pilgrimage and liturgical celebrations honoring Saint Francis Xavier. The Javierada showed me a Church in Spain that is very much alive and fruitful. I’m grateful to have experienced this vibrant aspect of the Spanish Church during my missionary stay.”

Deepening Faith and Hope through Pilgrimage

For Hao Nguyen from Vietnam, participating in the Javierada brought deep reflection, spiritual renewal, and heartfelt gratitude:

“The pilgrimage to Javierada was very meaningful for me. I saw joy and hope in the faces of people walking in faith. This experience invited me to live with greater confidence, hope, peace, and love. It was truly a time of spiritual reflection and renewal, leaving me profoundly grateful. I thank God and everyone who was involved.”

A Tradition of Faith and Missionary Heritage

The Javierada pilgrimage originated in 1886 as an expression of thanksgiving to Saint Francis Xavier for protecting Navarra from a cholera epidemic. Officially established in 1940, these pilgrimages have since evolved into an essential spiritual tradition in the Navarra region of Spain. Initially, the Javieradas were held on the first two Sundays of March, coinciding with the Novena of Grace celebrated at the Castle of Javier, and were originally designated as separate pilgrimages for men and women.

Over time, the events became mixed, known thereafter as the First and Second Javierada. Eventually, the second Javierada was moved to the second Saturday afternoon of March, adopting a more festive and family-friendly atmosphere. Between these two official Javieradas, additional pilgrimages emerged, including those organized by local pastoral zones, vicariates, priests, monasteries, women’s associations, and retired groups. This year’s second Javierada, held on March 15, 2025, was particularly characterized by joy and a strong sense of community and family.

The experiences shared by David, Hoang, Djibril, Douglas, and Hao demonstrate that the Javierada pilgrimage is an integral component of OTP formation. Beyond cultural and linguistic immersion, the pilgrimage facilitates deeper spiritual reflection, supports personal discernment, and strengthens their understanding of religious and missionary vocation as members of the Society of the Divine Word (SVD). Participation in such events helps OTP students clarify their vocational paths, deepen their commitment, and prepare effectively for missionary service wherever they are sent.
