Jubilee of the World of Education 2025: Renewing the Mission of SVD Education
GMD
The Jubilee invited all who serve in education to rediscover their call as pilgrims of hope—people who accompany others on their journey toward truth, understanding, and compassion. It reminded us that education is more than the transmission of knowledge; it is a transformative process that shapes lives, builds bridges of understanding, and nurtures faith that moves toward action for the common good.
For the Divine Word Missionaries (SVD), this Jubilee held special significance. Since the time of St. Arnold Janssen, education has been at the heart of our missionary vocation. He viewed schools and universities as sacred spaces where faith and reason meet, where intercultural dialogue becomes a way of evangelization, and where students are empowered to serve others with justice, integrity, and love.
In the spirit of this Jubilee celebration, we are pleased to share an article by Fr. Narciso A. Cellan, Jr., SVD, DComm, titled “Prophetic Dialogue: A Transformative Vision for SVD Education.”
Prophetic Dialogue: A Transformative Vision for SVD Education
Narciso A. Cellan, Jr., SVD
In recent years, I have engaged in deep reflection on the continuing relevance of the missionary spirit of St. Arnold Janssen within our SVD educational institutions. The central challenge has been to discern how our schools and universities can authentically incarnate our Founder’s vision—a vision that synthesizes faith with reason, and deepens both through a dynamic engagement with the world in service. This period of reflection and scholarly inquiry has culminated in two studies that I am pleased to present:
- Prophetic Dialogue as a Framework for SVD Education Ministry: A Case Study of Four SVD Higher Education Institutions in the Asia-Pacific Zone, and
- Prophetic Dialogue as an Integrative and Transformative Framework for SVD Mission in Higher Education.
Both papers seek to answer a vital question: How can prophetic dialogue serve as a framework and operative paradigm for our education ministry today?
In response, I argue that prophetic dialogue must be understood as more than a theological abstraction or a mere missionary slogan. It constitutes an existential orientation, a way of life, if you will, and a comprehensive educational praxis that integrates critical thought with lived faith, compassionate encounter with social critique, and respectful listening with courageous witness. When fully embodied, this approach makes our educational institutions genuine spaces of encounter and transformation.
The first paper grounds this theory in praxis, presenting a qualitative analysis of four SVD higher education institutions across the Asia-Pacific region: the University of San Carlos (Philippines), Divine Word University (Papua New Guinea), Nanzan University (Japan), and Fu Jen Catholic University (Taiwan). The research illustrates how each, within its distinct socio-cultural and historical context, embodies prophetic dialogue through a sustained commitment to academic rigor, social responsibility, and profound intercultural engagement.
Building upon these empirical findings, the second paper constructs a robust conceptual framework. It posits that prophetic dialogue in education is upheld by four interdependent pillars:
- Prophetic Witness: Positioning education as a liberative practice that critically engages and seeks to transform unjust social structures.
- Dialogical Pedagogy: Fostering authentic encounter in the learning environment, where diverse perspectives are honored and mutual learning is paramount.
- Integral Ecology: Promoting a holistic formation that nurtures a profound responsibility for both human dignity and the integrity of creation.
- Missionary Discipleship: Forming leaders whose scholarship and professional competence are rooted in a faith expressed through compassionate service to the world.
My hope is that that these works will serve as catalysts for deep reflection and will generate conversation within our SVD educational and mission communities. Our vocation extends beyond instruction and transmission of knowledge; we are called to facilitate personal and societal transformation through dialogue, compassion, and courageous proclamation of truth. An education animated by the Spirit is, in its essence, a prophetic mission—a ministry of reconciliation, justice, and peace.
I invite you to read these studies and use them as resources for formation, strategic planning, and community discernment. Together, may we continue to nurture the kind of education that shapes prophetic witnesses and bridge-builders for our fractured world. Let us keep walking this path of faith and dialogue, grounded in the Word and open to the world.
