Liceo Alemán Mission Group Brings Hope to the Homeless

Los Ángeles, Chile, March 15, 2025, the “Abraza a un hermano” mission group from Liceo Alemán del Verbo Divino resumed its commitment to supporting people experiencing homelessness.

Following the Holy Mass celebrated in the chapel of the Divine Word Missionary community, volunteers renewed their outreach visits to Hogar de Cristo, a shelter providing assistance to the city’s most vulnerable individuals.

Founded on October 19, 1944, by Jesuit priest Saint Alberto Hurtado, Hogar de Cristo is a non-profit organization dedicated to assisting people facing extreme hardship in Chile.

Inspired by his teaching, “Give until it hurts,” the institution’s mission extends beyond improving the quality of life for the marginalized—it also seeks to defend their dignity and rights.

Guided by Divine Word Missionary (SVD) priests, alongside students, alumni, parents, and teachers, the members of  “Abraza a un hermano” organize weekly visits to provide both material and spiritual support.

Every Saturday, after celebrating the Holy Eucharist, the group gathers at the SVD community to prepare bread, milk, hot chocolate, and small gifts such as clothing and essential items before heading to Hogar de Cristo.

Their mission goes beyond providing basic needs; they also share the Word of God, foster conversations, and build meaningful relationships with those they serve. In return, they are always met with warm embraces filled with gratitude.

During the season of Lent and within the spirit of the Jubilee Year, both for the Church and the Society of the Divine Word, the Liceo Alemán del Verbo Divino community reaffirms its commitment to serving the most vulnerable.

Their mission is clear: to bring hope, ensuring that every individual feels welcomed and valued—just as Christ welcomes each of us, regardless of social status.

This mission project not only transforms the lives of those in need but also strengthens a spirit of fraternity and solidarity, reminding everyone that small acts of kindness can have a profound impact.
