Love for Creation Moves Us to Action: A Living Mission in Asunción, Paraguay

Hernán Viera Zorrilla and Margarita Peña

As part of the Season of Creation and in celebration of the 10th anniversary of the encyclical Laudato Si’, the laypeople of San Juan Bautista – Verbo Divino Parish in Asunción, Paraguay, took an important step in their journey of ecological and spiritual commitment: the creation of the Laudato Si’ Reading Club, a space designed to promote ecological conversion through faith, reflection, and community action.

Inspired by this year’s theme, “To Hope and Act with Creation,” members of the club launched their first project: beautifying the parish garden. This simple initiative was embraced as an act of love for the Creator and gratitude for the gift of nature. Each plant placed was a prayer, each seed an expression of hope. As they joyfully say: “We know it is God who entrusts us with the mission of lovingly caring for His creation.”

One of the most meaningful moments was the outdoor Eucharistic Celebration, held under the shade of the native Yvapovõ tree, an ecological and spiritual symbol of the community. The event brought together three important celebrations:

  • 10 years of Laudato Si’
  • 150 years of the SVD Foundation
  • 58 years of SVD mission in the parish

Alongside the Eucharist, a collection of plants for the garden and non-perishable food for needy families was organized, bringing to life the SVD dimension of Justice, Peace, and Integrity of Creation (JPIC)—an essential expression of living faith.

The journey continues. The next step will be a pilgrimage to the Franciscan Ecological Sanctuary, where the group will plant a tree as a sign of commitment to our Common Home and spend a day in prayer, contemplation, and ecological action—including feeding native birds with natural materials prepared by the club.

The mission that inspires them is clear: to be missionaries of hope in creation, responding to the cry of the Earth and the cry of the poor, and advancing the SVD mission through loving, caring, and ecologically rooted actions.
