Masih Mahotsav: A Musical Celebration of Unity and Faith
Norbert Herman, SVD
The festival was inaugurated by Archbishop Anil J.T. Couto, joined by religious leaders from Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, Jain, Jewish, and Brahmakumari communities. In a solemn moment, they observed a minute of silence in memory of Pope Francis, who passed away on April 21 at the age of 88, and for the victims of the April 22 Pahalgam attack in Jammu and Kashmir, where 26 Hindu tourists were killed.
The presence of diverse faith leaders reinforced the Mahotsav’s goal: promoting interfaith harmony and peace amid growing societal divisions. In his address, Archbishop Couto urged communities to replace fear with hope and called for compassion and collective action. Interfaith representatives echoed these sentiments, highlighting the role of music and faith in healing and unity.
The evening’s highlight was the musical showcase featuring choirs and ensembles from each of the 14 churches. Performances included classical hymns, gospel music, and contemporary Christian songs in both Hindi and English, reflecting the richness of Delhi’s Christian culture. Each choir received mementos and certificates in recognition of their contributions.
The event was introduced by Mr. Mark Clive, advisor to Masih Mahotsav, and convened by Norbert Herman, SVD, who welcomed dignitaries and acknowledged the support of various faith leaders and organizations.
More than just a musical program, the Mahotsav became a public witness of solidarity and peace, encouraging dialogue and mutual respect among different communities. The evening concluded with a fellowship meal, further strengthening bonds of friendship.
Organizers extended heartfelt thanks to Rev. Varinder Kumar, Rev. Sujeev Dass, and the many clergy, donors, and volunteers who made the event possible. The success of the Masih Mahotsav has inspired plans for future events later this year.
In a city as diverse as Delhi, the Masih Mahotsav stands as a powerful reminder of the role that music, faith, and community play in fostering unity—a message ever more vital in today’s world.
