Missiology Course in Quito, Ecuador
Navil D’Silva, SVD
The course was led and accompanied by Mons. Moacir Gulart, Bishop of the Vicariate of Sucumbíos in the Ecuadorian Amazon. Deep and inspiring topics were addressed throughout the course, such as: general missiology, the mission of Jesus in the Gospels, healing and abundant life, light that shines in the realities of the world, the prophetic and missionary spirit of Jesus and its implications for our present time, faithful and creative disciples and missionaries based on the final documents of the Fifth General Conference of the Latin American and Caribbean Bishops (Aparecida), a brief history of mission in Latin America, and the missionary approach of the Church according to recent continental Church documents.
The topics were well received by the participants, who committed themselves to deepen their understanding and apply them in the realities of their parishes and mission locations.
“Our reflection on the journey of the Churches in Latin America and the Caribbean takes place amid the lights and shadows of our time. We are troubled—but not disheartened—by the great changes we are experiencing. We have received invaluable gifts that help us to see reality as missionary disciples of Jesus Christ.” (Aparecida Document, 20)
In this jubilee year, we are called to continue the mission of the Divine Word with enthusiasm and passion so that the Light of Christ may shine within us and through our good works on behalf of the most needy in our society.
There was a strong emphasis on the mission of transforming our parishes into missionary parishes—rooted in our charismatic and missionary identity, and in our healing and transforming spirituality.
“Missionary spirituality moves us to encounter the Light and to shine within the realities of the world. Reflecting on the Word of God in the midst of these realities urges missionaries to go out into the world to heal the wounded. In this way, it is spirituality that moves a person to empathize with others, to act concretely, and to show solidarity with others.” (19th General Chapter, 45)
Our name is our mission: to heal the wounds of the world and to be a light of goodness and mercy of the Incarnate Word.
