Mission Circle Dialogues: Therapeutic and Cathartic Reflections from the SVD-PHS Lay Partners

Brenette L. Abrenica (Coordinator, SVD PHS Lay Partners)

The Divine Word Lay Mission Partners are called to a twofold commitment to mission and prayer, a defining mark of every SVD missionary presence. In the Philippine Southern Province (PHS), lay partners journey alongside SVD missionaries in various apostolates, contributing both to SVD-led and lay-initiated activities. While these engagements are meaningful, they often focus on action, leaving little space for reflection on their shared missionary journey.

The introduction of the Mission Circle Dialogues offered a new and valuable opportunity to pause, reflect, and listen. Initiated through the Generalate and presented locally by Fr. I Wayan Heriyanto, SVD, the process was further clarified through an orientation by Fr. Marlon Vargas, SVD, and contextualized by coordinator Brenette Abrenica. The dialogues were grounded in the themes of the 19th General Chapter, emphasizing the role of lay partners in mission and highlighting the principles and phases of mission circles as a tool for communication and sharing.

Following the orientation, the lay partners moved into implementation. Volunteer facilitators were identified and trained, and several groups began conducting dialogues, mostly through online platforms. Despite challenges in time and availability, the participants remained committed, creatively using digital tools to sustain the process and ensure participation across distances.

The dialogues yielded rich insights. Many participants shared that their vocation as lay partners was inspired by the witness of SVD missionaries—their lives, apostolates, and engagement with social realities. This inspiration deepened their connection to the charism of St. Arnold Janssen and strengthened their desire to actively participate in the mission.

At the same time, the dialogues surfaced difficult but important realities. Some lay partners spoke about members leaving the group due to leadership changes or interpersonal tensions. Even among those who remain, conflicts are part of the journey. Yet these conversations proved meaningful. What was once unspoken found a voice, making the process both therapeutic and cathartic. The dialogues allowed participants to acknowledge both the strengths and challenges of their shared experience.

The Mission Circle Dialogues have become empowering moments for the lay partners. They provide space to step back from routine, gather insights from lived experiences, and renew their commitment to mission. While online platforms have made participation more accessible, there is also a shared recognition that face-to-face encounters could deepen the experience further.

As the process continues, the lay partners look forward to further dialogues that will shape their future direction. These shared reflections serve as a source of inspiration, helping them grow as more committed and reflective collaborators in the SVD mission.
