Newly Ordained SVD Missionaries in Angola Undergo Annual Formation in Caculama
Shann Fernandes, SVD, and Sebastião da Silva, SVD
The program was facilitated by Fr. Denis Pereira, SVD, Mission Secretary of the Province. On 13 January, the first day of formation, two talks were delivered. The first focused on key insights from the 18th General Chapter, while the second reflected on St. Arnold Janssen’s spirituality under the theme: “Witnessing to the Light: Faithful and Creative Disciples in a Wounded World.”
On 14 January, Fr. Denis invited the confreres to a guided sharing session based on reflective questions about their personal wounds and how these experiences could be healed and integrated into their missionary service in a wounded world. The confreres engaged openly in deep reflection, sharing meaningful insights and offering constructive suggestions to one another.
On the Feast of St. Arnold Janssen, the group participated in the parish Mass presided over by Fr. Mauro Panzo, SVD. In his homily, he highlighted the spirituality of St. Arnold’s parents and its continuing relevance for missionary life today.
After Mass, the confreres enjoyed a fraternal outing to Calandula Falls, where they experienced the beauty of nature and shared a meal together in a spirit of community. In the evening, following Vespers, they joined Sr. Isabel, SSpS, and local aspirants for an agape meal marked by joy and fellowship.
On 16 January, after celebrating the Holy Eucharist, the newly formed missionaries returned to their respective missions, renewed in spirit and strengthened in their commitment to the Divine Word.
