From 30 June to 3 July 2025, confrères from Ireland and England gathered at the Star of the Sea Retreat and Conference Centre in Mullaghmore, County Sligo, to reflect on the current state of the province, its past, present challenges and opportunities, and the future with its hopes and anxieties.

This triduum marked the sesquicentennial of the Society, providing a platform for honest discussion and heartfelt gratitude.

The gathering opened with a historical timeline of the SVD in Ireland and England, aiming to connect with the past, honour pioneering confrères, and acknowledge God’s providence throughout the Society’s journey. Participants highlighted the importance of returning to their roots with gratitude in order to confront present challenges and embrace future endeavours with hope and trust in God’s promise.

Key themes discussed included the generalate proposal, memory, gratitude, attentiveness, courage, and trust. The first day concluded with reflections on Fr. Henry Heekeren’s 1980 work, A Common Call to Serve the Lord, followed by discussions on shared prayer practices, mission-aligned commitments, mutual support, resource sharing, co-responsibility, and continuous reflection on the SVD charism.

On the second day, the focus shifted to the present reality of the IBP province, particularly in terms of identity and addressing both provincial and societal wounds. Fr. Carlos del Valle’s concept of “a grammar of the human dimension” guided reflections on the human aspects of religious life. The day concluded with an open conversation on intercultural opportunities and challenges, especially in light of the transition from monocultural to multicultural communities and parishes.

The final day centred on the 18th General Chapter, featuring a video presentation on interculturality. Participants emphasized that interculturality must go beyond mere coexistence, calling for renewed partnerships with lay people across the province.

The triduum concluded with daily afternoon Masses and evening social events that fostered community spirit and a sense of shared purpose. Confrères acknowledged the ongoing need for open dialogue to strengthen unity, clarify shared goals, and deepen commitment to mission—while facing the challenges of the province with courage and faith.
