Religious Brothers Day Celebrated at Divine Word College, Iowa
Michael Decker, SVD
The day began with the celebration of the Eucharist at 8:00 a.m., presided over by the Rector, Fr. Simon Hoang, SVD, with Bro. Mike Decker, SVD, serving as lector.
As part of the program, one of a three-part video series promoting the brother vocation was presented, featuring Bro. Ron Fratzke, SVD, who has been serving in Thailand for over 25 years. His reflection offered insight into the identity and mission of SVD brothers today. He emphasized that openness to God’s call remains central to the vocation, inviting candidates to discern where they are being led in mission.
Bro. Ron also highlighted the distinctive character of the brother vocation within the Society. Compared to priests, brothers often have greater flexibility in responding to various pastoral and missionary needs. This allows them to engage in diverse ministries such as social outreach, administration, healthcare, and other forms of service beyond traditional parish structures. Such adaptability, he noted, enables brothers to be present in areas where the Church’s mission is most needed.
At the same time, he acknowledged the changing reality of the vocation. The number of SVD brothers has declined over the years. He encouraged candidates to see themselves as pioneers of a renewed brother vocation—rooted in a strong identity, open to new forms of mission, and willing to collaborate closely with the laity.
The celebration served not only as a recognition of the contribution of religious brothers but also as an invitation for deeper reflection on their evolving role in the Church.
