Shining in the Margins: SVD’s Weekly Mission Brings Prayer, Healing, and Hope
SSD-Uganda Communication Team
In hidden places, faith becomes tangible, healing becomes communal, and the Gospel reveals its power not through grand gestures, but through presence, listening, and shared humanity.
Every Friday, together with catechists, members of the Catholic Action group, youth, and children, we visit families and villages to pray for the sick and bless children and infants. We also celebrate Holy Mass in several Catholic homes. At times, we gather in the village center or at a catechist’s home to pray the Rosary with the Blessed Virgin Mary, offering special intentions for peace in South Sudan. During these gatherings, we teach the faithful how to pray the Rosary and the Divine Mercy Chaplet, and how to share the Word of God in small Christian communities. We encourage them not only to pray with us but also to continue meeting every Friday for prayer and Bible sharing.
During the month of November, we place particular emphasis on praying for their departed loved ones. These visits also give us the opportunity to introduce our parish activities and invite families to join us for Sunday Mass. After praying the Rosary, sharing the Scriptures, or celebrating the Eucharist and other sacraments, we listen attentively to the stories of our parishioners to better understand their realities and grow together in faith and community life. We always end our visits by sharing a warm cup of tea, a simple gesture that strengthens our bond. Many express their joy and gratitude, saying how happy they are to see the SVD missionaries return to their parish and villages to pray with them again. Some even offer sweet potatoes, bananas, or cassava as heartfelt tokens of appreciation for our presence and prayers for them, their families, and their country.
In the Bidibidi Settlement in Uganda, every Friday some of our confreres visit the Sacred Heart of Jesus Chapel. The gathering begins with the Sacrament of Reconciliation, followed by the Rosary, the Eucharistic celebration, and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. On certain occasions, mentoring and counseling sessions are also offered, led by Br. Bernad, SVD.
Through our Joyful Friday Missions, we share the SVD charism with all people in our mission areas, bearing witness to God’s love and mercy—truly fulfilling the words of Jesus: “Your light must shine before others.”
As a result of these Friday missions, many more people now come to our parish on Sundays to attend Mass and participate in parish activities. Children play football, youth and women help clean the church grounds, catechism candidates attend classes in preparation for their First Communion, and together with our catechists, we continue visiting the sick to bring them Holy Communion and other sacraments. We can truly see and feel that our community and Christian life are growing day by day—within our parish, in the mission settlement, and in our hearts.
