Solemnity and Flavors: Celebrating Christ the King, SVD Style

Last Sunday, November 24, the Collegio Verbo Divino in Rome became a hub of joy and reverence as the SVD community from Nemi, the San Pietro College, the Sisters Servants of the Holy Spirit, and other guests gathered to celebrate the Solemnity of Christ the King of the Universe. But this was no ordinary Sunday. The occasion also marked the anniversaries of vows and ordinations for several confreres, celebrating milestones of 25, 40, and even 50 years of commitment. Even the Superior General, Father Anselmo Ribeiro, who presided over the Eucharist, was commemorating 25 years since his vows—a reminder that every role in the mission is steeped in personal history.

The homily was delivered by Father José Antunes, whose eloquent words captivated the assembly. He underscored the significance of recognizing Christ as the center of our lives and mission, reminding all that His kingship is not adorned with a golden crown but marked by the cross—a reign of humility and service.

At the conclusion of the Mass, Vice General Xavier Thirukudumbam offered heartfelt congratulations laced with a touch of humor, while Jan Stefanow spoke on behalf of the honorees, sharing stories that drew laughter and applause—testaments to the camaraderie cultivated over decades of community life.

The celebration then shifted to a more relaxed setting, with lively conversations and hearty snacks. Despite the bone-chilling cold, spirits were warm as attendees indulged in a feast. Of course, no meal would be complete without gelato, though some joked about the wisdom of having ice cream on such a frosty day.

It was a day of gratitude, joy, and unmistakable SVD humor—a celebration that beautifully wove solemnity and conviviality into a tapestry of shared faith and fellowship.
