Spain, Portugal, and Italy Provinces Hold Subzone Meeting on Communion and Shared Mission
Vivian Furtado, SVD
Each Provincial presented an overview of his respective Province, offering insights into local realities, key challenges, financial situations, and significant aspects of community life and mission. A shared concern that emerged was the growing number of elderly confreres, a reality affecting all three Provinces. The Italian Province also noted its unique context, shaped by the coexistence of three languages—both a richness and a pastoral challenge.
Formation was a central focus of the discussions, particularly the OTP program and the accompaniment of new missionaries. Participants emphasized the importance of a well-integrated formation process that fosters human, spiritual, and pastoral growth.
In the area of pastoral ministry, the meeting reaffirmed the central role of parishes as key spaces of missionary engagement. Special attention was given to ministry among ethnic communities, including Filipino, African, and Polish faithful, especially in Spain.
The meeting also reviewed ongoing forms of interprovincial collaboration, such as retreats, formation initiatives, regular council meetings, and coordination at the subzone level. Discussions on the role of the subzone coordinator highlighted the need for deeper synergy among the Provinces.
The gathering concluded in a spirit of fraternity and renewed commitment. Participants expressed hope that the insights shared will strengthen collaboration and bear fruit for the future of the Subzone and its common mission.
