At least 730 confirmation candidates took part in the vibrant spiriNIGHT 2025, held over two days—April 4 and 5, 2025—for the first time at HLW Elisabethinum in St. Johann im Pongau. The event was organized by the Salzburg Catholic Youth team (KJ), with the support of 85 young volunteers who ensured the smooth flow of activities.

The event drew wide attention—even a confirmation group from neighboring Freilassing, Germany made the trip. According to their accompanying leader, no other program in the region offered such an attractive experience for confirmation candidates. The first evening hosted approximately 330 young people, while the second welcomed around 400, representing all parts of the Archdiocese of Salzburg.

Mr. Florian Huber, Managing Director of the Catholic Youth, emphasized the essential role of volunteers in making spiriNIGHT possible:

“Around 85 volunteers from different regions gave their best—whether with technology, logistics, catering, or as workshop leaders. Many of them are high school or university students. spiriNIGHT is not just a memorable experience for the confirmation candidates, but also for everyone involved.”

Felix, a 16-year-old student from St. Rupert in Radstadt, confirmed this sentiment, noting that it was his second time volunteering at the event.

“There’s a great sense of community among the team, and it’s just fun to organize something this big for young people,” he shared.

The two-day event was led by Mr. Patrik Ehrenberger (Head of the spiriNIGHT Project) and Mr. Florian Huber, along with numerous employees and volunteers from the KJ team. The main moderators for the event were Ms. Franziska Betz (Youth Moderator for the Lungau-Pongau-Tennengau regions) and Fr. Richard Sao Joao Cardozo, SVD, Youth Director.

Several SVD confreres played active roles during the workshops, especially in the lively “Dance & Movement” session. Those involved included Fr. Edwin Reyes, Fr. Paulus Sujianto, Fr. Eduardus Only Putra, Frt. Demetrius Nakung Darmawan (OTP), and Sr. Veronika Samosir, SSpS. Additionally, Frt. Edith Erian Dita (OTP) made a significant contribution as part of the logistics team.

Reflecting on the event, Fr. Richard shared:

“As a Youth Director, I would describe spiriNIGHT as an event fueled by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, and by the dedication and active participation of everyone involved. What makes these two evenings so special is the goal—to bring confirmation candidates closer to the Christian faith, the Roman Catholic Church, and the Holy Spirit.”

Participants were offered a wide variety of creative and engaging workshops, including

  • Hands of Hope
  • Creative Corner
  • Bible Escape Room
  • Dance & Movement
  • …and of course, time to relax with snacks and drinks

At the heart of the event was a service of the Word of God, presented with modern reflections and a dynamic approach. The experience was enhanced by a powerful praise and worship segment led by Mrs. Kerstin Aschenberger and her team, bringing a joyful close to each evening.

spiriNIGHT 2025 once again proved to be more than just an event—it was a vibrant encounter of faith, fellowship, and youthful energy.
