SSD Mission: Accompanying the Afflicted Back to Their Homeland
Xavier Thirukudumbam, SVD (Vice Superior General)
After years of living among the people of the vast Bidibidi refugee settlement in Uganda—sharing their struggles and caring for their needs in every possible way—the Divine Word Missionaries returned in August to revive Holy Family Parish in Lainya County, South Sudan, from which they had been forced to flee in 2016. In both South Sudan and Uganda, they proved themselves to be faithful, creative, and compassionate disciples in the face of difficult and demanding circumstances.
The “return of the samurai,” the “valiant Verbiti,” to South Sudan was a moment of jubilation filled with hope and optimism. Although the situation in South Sudan has not improved dramatically and may not return to normal anytime soon, the courage, conviction, and commitment with which the missionaries returned to Lainya sent a powerful message to all stakeholders in the country.
Inspired, motivated, and energized by the brave and exemplary witness of the SVD missionaries, many people began returning in large numbers from the refugee camps to their homeland. By leading from the front, the missionaries won the trust and confidence of the people. As true shepherds, their willingness to risk their lives for their flock and to guide them toward a new beginning in SSD powerfully demonstrates their deep missionary spirit.
Their strong belief in solidarity and synodality enabled them to build trust and collaboration with government authorities, non-governmental organizations, and other partners in order to provide the best possible assistance to the afflicted population. We stand in solidarity with our missionaries and continue to accompany them in their life and mission in South Sudan.
