In his homily, Fr. Ivan reflected on the challenges faced by elderly people amid rapid social and technological change. While society continues to advance in areas such as artificial intelligence and digital technology, he noted that many older people experience loneliness, neglect, and a lack of adequate care. He encouraged parishioners to remember the love and care they received from their grandparents and parents and to respond with the same compassion, respect, and gratitude, especially when elderly family members face illness and vulnerability.

Pope Francis instituted the World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly in 2021, to be celebrated annually on the fourth Sunday of July, close to the feast of Sts. Joachim and Anne. The observance highlights the vital role of grandparents and elderly people in families, society, and the Church, while challenging attitudes that regard older people as burdens or exclude them from community life. The 2026 theme, chosen by Pope Leo XIV, is “I Will Never Forget You,” recalling God’s enduring faithfulness and care, including in old age.

Mr. Bikakhon Halam, a respected village leader from the EFCI denomination, also expressed appreciation for the Catholic Church’s longstanding tradition of honoring and respecting the elderly.
Through this celebration, St. Raphael Parish joined the universal Church in affirming the dignity and valuable presence of grandparents and elderly people. The gathering also encouraged younger generations to accompany them with gratitude, respect, and loving care.
