SVD Angola Celebrates 150 Years of Mission: A Living Memory, A Continuing Journey

Sebastião Da Silva, SVD

Celebrating the 150th anniversary of the foundation of the Society of the Divine Word Missionaries (SVD) is both a tribute and a renewal of memory — a remembrance of a history woven with faith, service, and generous dedication to the Word. This jubilee is not merely a nostalgic look at the past, but a living memory that continues to inspire us toward the future.

Throughout this Jubilee Year, SVD communities across Angola have opened their doors and hearts to commemorate the occasion with joy, creativity, and missionary zeal. The celebrations have taken many forms — solemn Eucharists, pilgrimages with relics, processions, formation meetings, dances, songs, cultural presentations, and gestures of solidarity with the poor.
Each event reflected the beauty of faith lived in communion: spiritual, communal, and prophetic. Wherever the Jubilee was celebrated, it revealed a living Church — visible, growing, and deeply connected with the people.

Faith Inculturated and Shared
A striking feature of these celebrations was the spirit of inculturation. Communities expressed their faith through local languages, symbols, dress, music, and flavors. This rich cultural diversity was not an obstacle but a blessing, showing that unity can flourish amid difference. In every expression of culture, the Gospel found new life — a sign that mission is always a transformative encounter between faith and the world.

Remembering the First Missionaries
The Jubilee was also a time for grateful remembrance. It invited everyone to recall the first missionaries — men and women moved by love for the Gospel — who gave their lives in often challenging contexts. Their courage and dedication continue to bear fruit in the lives of today’s missionaries, both religious and lay, who proclaim the Word with faith and hope.

A Testament of Life and Mission
This first edition of FOLHA SVD–ANGOLA gathers testimonies, chronicles, and photographs from SVD communities across the country. Each word, image, and story represents a seed of faith — a small yet powerful contribution of missionaries united in love for the Triune God.

On this central date of celebration, September 8, 2025, SVD communities around the world join together in thanksgiving, renewing their commitment to proclaim the Word and serve humanity.

The Jubilee is not an endpoint, but an invitation to keep walking. The Word continues to become flesh, and the mission continues — with generous hearts and hopeful spirits.
