From March 10 to 14, 2025, the Assembly of the Divine Word Missionaries in Central America (CAM) took place at the Franciscan Center in Boquete, Panama. Unlike previous gatherings, this assembly had a special character, as it focused primarily on ongoing formation. To guide this process, the CAM region invited Fr. Dariusz Stanisław Pielak, SVD, a spirituality expert from the Poland Province, who accompanied the missionaries through three days of enriching formation.

On the first day of formation, Fr. Dariusz reflected on the evolution of the identity and mission of the Divine Word Missionaries, highlighting the meaning of the congregation’s name and the significance of the word “Society” in its identity. He explained that although the congregation was inspired by St. Arnold Janssen, there was no clearly documented gradual spiritual evolution, which has made it difficult to define its spirituality over time.

Regarding spiritual identity, Fr. Dariusz emphasized the union of the Divine Word and the Holy Spirit in mission, and the need to live the charism as a gift to the Church. Although St. Arnold did not establish a formal school of spirituality, the congregation has developed its spirituality through the witness of its saints and blesseds.

While speaking about charism and identity, Fr. Dariusz stressed the importance of preaching and witnessing to the Word of God. In this context, he introduced the concept of “prophetic dialogue,” which emerged during the 2000 General Chapter, combining dialogue and prophecy as foundational pillars of the SVD mission.

On the second day, Fr. Dariusz focused on St. Arnold Janssen’s deep devotion to the Holy Trinity. From this devotion came the scapular and the medal of the Divine Word, symbols of identity and missionary commitment within the congregation.

On the final day, Fr. Dariusz highlighted the importance of the Virgin Mary as Mother of the Word, and presented an initiative centered on Our Lady of the Word. He underscored the role of the missionaries of the Word, reminding us that God’s Word gives birth to new life, both in Mary and in all believers, who are called to embody and transmit the Gospel with faithfulness and dedication.

After completing the three-day formation, the CAM missionaries took time for dialogue and reflection on the assembly. Fr. Miguel Malik, SVD, vice-regional superior, announced the arrival of four new missionaries: Fr. Chabi Galbert from Benin, Fr. Reynaldo Regalado from the Philippines, and Frs. Alfredo Laudasi and Wilfredo Lerisam from Indonesia, who will begin their mission in parishes across the region.

The Assembly also included discussion of the 150th anniversary of the Congregation. On this occasion, Bishop Edgardo Cedeño, SVD, emphasized Pope Francis’ recognition of the missionary work of the Divine Word Missionaries, highlighting the global impact of the Congregation, especially within the context of a Church that goes forth. This recognition affirms the pioneering role of the Congregation in bringing the Gospel to every corner of the world.

The retreat and assembly concluded with a sending Mass, presided over by Bishop Edgardo Cedeño, SVD. In his homily, Bishop Cedeño emphasized the unique and irrevocable call of the Divine Word Missionaries. During the celebration, the medal of the Divine Word was conferred along with its official formula. The bishop presented the medal to each of the CAM missionaries, saying, “The Word became flesh,” to which each one responded, “and dwelt among us.” With this gesture, the SVDs of CAM renewed their missionary commitment, reaffirming the dream of St. Arnold Janssen.
