The celebration, which honored Our Lady in the month traditionally dedicated to her, gathered members of the local parish and SVD missionaries for prayer, hymns, and reflection amidst the backdrop of one of Austria’s busiest traffic routes.
The location, near a 13-meter-high noise barrier—the tallest in the country—was chosen to highlight the ongoing struggle for environmental protection and public health in the face of noise and air pollution.
“Our inspiration was the figure of Mary as Our Lady of Protection, who is invoked in times of danger and need,” said Fr. Franz Helm, SVD, one of the organizers. “We wanted to draw attention to the environmental challenges posed by motorized traffic and to give thanks for protective measures already achieved.”
Since January 2025, a speed limit of 80 km/h has been implemented in the area, aiming to reduce noise and traffic congestion. The devotion offered prayers of gratitude for these steps, as well as intercessions for continued commitment to climate justice and care for creation.
The prayer service was led by Fr. Helm, Br. Emanuel Huemer SVD, Fr. Francis Bakilatob SVD, parish vicar of Wiener Neudorf, and Fr. Josef Denkmayr SVD, with active participation from the local parish community.
The liturgy included scripture readings, Marian hymns, and reflections grounded in the theme: Where do we need protection today?
“In religious art, Mary is often depicted as the ‘Protective Mantle Madonna’ under whose shelter people find refuge,” noted Br. Huemer, a member of the SVD’s Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation (JPIC) team. “We wanted to illustrate that amidst global ecological concerns, there are successful examples of environmental improvements worth celebrating and replicating.”
The initiative aligns with the SVD’s deepening global commitment to ecological advocacy, especially in this Jubilee Year marking 150 years since the congregation’s founding.
The 2024 General Chapter of the Society reaffirmed this mission by incorporating care for creation into the congregation’s guiding principles.
