SVD Confreres and Lay Partners Conduct Outreach Mission to Support Refugees in Botswana

Imelda Tagavilla (SVD Lay Partner) and Dario Figueroa, SVD

On Sunday, 15 February 2026, SVD confreres and Lay Mission Partners from St. Augustine Parish in Maun, Botswana, carried out an outreach mission to visit refugee brothers and sisters at Dukwi Refugee Camp. The team traveled approximately 360 kilometers from Maun to the camp, bringing not only essential material assistance but also a meaningful witness of compassion, solidarity, and missionary presence.

The outreach focused on distributing essential items to refugee families, including food hampers, pre-loved clothing, shoes, blankets, and other basic necessities. Each item shared represented far more than material support—it was a tangible expression of dignity, care, and Christian love. For many families living in difficult and uncertain circumstances, these donations provided comfort, relief, and renewed hope.

Beyond the distribution of goods, the encounter became a moment of genuine human connection. The smiles, gratitude, and warm interactions between the visitors and the refugee community revealed the powerful impact of even simple acts of kindness. The presence of the SVD confreres and Lay Partners affirmed that the mission of the Church is not only proclaimed through words but also lived through concrete acts of service and accompaniment.

This outreach was made possible through the generous support of donors, volunteers, and well-wishers from St. Augustine Parish and the wider community. Many contributed through material donations, while others offered their time and energy in sorting, packing, organizing, and supporting the mission through prayer and encouragement. Each contribution played a vital role in making the outreach successful and demonstrated the strength of a community united in compassion and shared responsibility.

The team expressed sincere gratitude to the SVD Lay Partners Maun Team for their dedication and generous service. Special thanks were also extended to Dr. and Mrs. Nkasama, Mrs. Mbuka, and Sr. Constance, OLA, who accompanied the outreach team, as well as to Fr. Charles Kporfor, SVD, who warmly welcomed and supported the group at Dukwi Refugee Camp.

This outreach marks an important beginning for future initiatives. Encouraged by this experience, the SVD confreres and Lay Partners reaffirmed their commitment to continue accompanying and supporting refugee communities. Their mission reflects the Gospel call to serve the most vulnerable and to be instruments of hope in a world marked by displacement, suffering, and uncertainty.

Through this outreach, the SVD confreres, Lay Partners, and the parish community of St. Augustine in Maun bore witness to the truth that compassion knows no borders. In serving their refugee brothers and sisters, they lived out the missionary spirit of the Society of the Divine Word—bringing hope, restoring dignity, and strengthening the bonds of our shared human family.
