SVD Mission in Liberia
Marcelo Cattaneo, SVD, General Mission Secretary
The two parishes are roughly 500 kilometers apart, linked by a combination of paved and dirt roads that traverse dense forest. The local population is mostly rural and of limited means, belonging to various Protestant, Anglican, Methodist, and Pentecostal communities, while Catholics constitute a small minority in the region.
Our primary focus is pastoral ministry among the communities we serve. We also support the dioceses by supervising and teaching in their parish schools. In addition, we operate a carpentry workshop that we hope to expand into a vocational training center for young people.
Among the most evident challenges, we must highlight the following:
Formation of Community Leaders
Accompanying and strengthening the faith and leadership skills of catechists, coordinators, pastoral council members, and others is essential for revitalizing the small Christian communities that continue to gather around the Word and the Eucharist.
Community Empowerment in a Post-War Context
The country has still not recovered from the Second Civil War (1999–2003). Beyond the visible structural ruins, a collective mentality persists—a dependence on outside agents to rebuild the economy and society.
Formal Education and Vocational Training for Young People
The educational system is very limited and lacks adequate infrastructure, proper furniture, and the necessary teaching materials to reach standard levels of education. Much can also be contributed through vocational workshops that teach practical skills and help young people secure employment more quickly.
Liberia is SVD mission territory, calling us to carry out our service with creativity, responding to the real cries of the people.
