The Society of the Divine Word (SVD) was well represented at the Assembly, continuing its longstanding contribution to missiological research and dialogue. Fr. Stephen Bevans, SVD (USA), coordinated the Theology of Mission study group, while Fr. Christian Tauchner, SVD, presented his paper, “Wrong Direction? Walking Together in Mission,” inspired by the Gospel account of the disciples on the road to Emmaus (Lk 24:13–35). Also participating were Fr. Marcelo Cataneo, SVD, Secretary for Missions of the Generalate, and Fr. Joachim Andrade, SVD, the IAMS representative for Latin America. Together with other participants, they engaged in theological dialogue and explored new pathways for mission in today’s global context.

Founded in the Netherlands in 1972, IAMS is a global and interdisciplinary association that brings together missiologists from different Christian traditions to promote mission through ecumenical, intercultural, and interreligious dialogue. Held every four years, the General Assembly featured six plenary presentations representing the continents and the IAMS presidency, along with ten thematic study groups covering biblical, theological, ecclesiological, historical, interreligious, Pentecostal, and socio-ecological perspectives.

The Assembly also included cultural evenings and a visit to Soweto, honoring South Africa’s history and its struggle against apartheid. During the closing business session, delegates elected a new Executive Committee and continental representatives. Fr. Joachim Andrade, SVD, was re-elected as the IAMS representative for Latin America for another four-year term. The next IAMS General Assembly will be held in Brazil in July 2030.
