SVD Parish in Seville Confirms: A Call to Be a Church of Shared Table and Outstretched Hand

David Lapar, SVD

“Be a Church where the table is shared and hands are extended.” This was the message of the Episcopal Vicar for the Social Area, Salvador Diánez Navarro, to the newly confirmed. On March 5, during the season of Lent, the Parroquia de Nuestra Señora del Carmen in Seville joyfully celebrated the Sacrament of Confirmation. Twenty-two members received the fullness of the Holy Spirit, thus completing the Sacraments of Christian Initiation. One of the candidates received the three Sacraments of Initiation for the first time.

The choice of date may seem unusual, as it depended on the availability of the Episcopal Vicar’s schedule. After considering several possible dates, March 5 was finally selected. The celebration proved to be spiritually and fraternally enriching.

Following a long period of catechesis that began in October 2024 and concluded on March 5, 2026, the group was spiritually accompanied through various themes that helped strengthen their friendship with God, their configuration with Christ, and the renewal and deepening of their Christian faith. The participants showed great interest, active engagement, and commitment throughout the sessions until the moment they received the sacrament.

Indeed, the invitation to “be a Church of shared table and outstretched hand” resonated strongly not only with those who were confirmed but also with all who participated in the Eucharistic celebration. The Vicar began his homily by emphasizing that it was a day of joy—not merely expressed in words, but a joy that moves us to go beyond ourselves in order to bring light to a world that often experiences deep darkness of heart. He encouraged the faithful to reach out to those in need of help and support. This becomes possible when we share our table, offering whatever we have—little or much—and extend our hands to lift up our brothers and sisters who live in uncertainty. Regarding the mission and service entrusted to the Church, he concluded: “Let us spread a pleasing fragrance through our good works.”

We give thanks to God, who through the Holy Spirit continues to touch people’s hearts, calling them to recognize the importance of the sacraments in their lives. We pray that the newly confirmed may become true and authentic Milites Christi (soldiers of Christ), as expressed by St. Ignatius of Loyola.

Newly confirmed parishioners and members of the community gather in joy after the celebration of the Sacrament of Confirmation.
