SVD Vietnam Province Holds 6th Provincial Assembly and Chapter

Đỗ Nguyên Vũ, SVD

The 6th Provincial Assembly and Chapter of the Vietnam Province of the Society of the Divine Word, held from March 16 to 18, 2026, took “Be My witnesses” (cf. Acts 1:8) as its guiding theme.

On the morning of March 16, 110 delegates representing the entire Province gathered at the Provincial House Chapel for the Opening Eucharist. Presided over by the Provincial Superior, Fr. John B. Nguyễn Hữu Duy, SVD, the celebration invoked the guidance of the Holy Spirit for the Assembly and Chapter, which take place every three years. In his homily, he highlighted these days as a grace-filled moment of unity, synodality, and discernment, marking the transition from the previous pastoral theme, “Feed my sheep” (cf. Jn 21:17), toward a more concrete missionary call: “Be My witnesses” in the evangelizing mission across Vietnam.

The opening working session began with a solemn procession of the Paschal Candle and the Book of the Gospels, followed by the proclamation of the Prologue of St. John’s Gospel and prayers for the enlightenment of the Holy Spirit. The Provincial Superior then presented the mission report of the previous term, including an evaluation of the implementation of its resolutions and recommendations. This was complemented by a synthesis of reflections on the theme document gathered from local assemblies, as well as reports and action plans from the Provincial Administration and commissions on Scripture, Education, Mission, JPIC, and Spirituality.

On March 17, the second day of the Assembly, participants began with the Eucharistic celebration of Tuesday of the Fourth Week of Lent. The Provincial Secretary presented a synthesis of 17 proposals from local assemblies, which were then discussed and discerned for inclusion as resolutions or recommendations for the 2026–2029 term. In the afternoon, the Assembly continued its work on formulating the new Mission Statement, while also reflecting on the growth and development of SVD communities and parishes across 13 dioceses.

Later that day, the Provincial Secretary formally announced the appointment of the Provincial Superior and Council for the 2026–2029 term:

  • Fr. John B. Nguyễn Hữu Duy, SVD – Provincial Superior
  • Fr. Martin Lê Quang Tuấn, SVD – Vice Provincial
  • Fr. Vincent Trần Trung Bảo, SVD – Admonitor
  • Fr. Peter Nguyễn Thanh Nhiệm, SVD – Council Member
  • Fr. Paul Nguyễn Hữu Thiện, SVD – Council Member

The day concluded with Evening Prayer and Eucharistic Adoration in thanksgiving for the blessings received throughout the Assembly and in the ongoing missionary life of the Province.

On March 18, the third day—designated as the Provincial Chapter—the number of delegates was reduced in accordance with Chapter norms. The day began with the Eucharist of Wednesday of the Fourth Week of Lent. The Chapter session opened with the customary rites: the procession of the Paschal Candle, the enthronement of the Sacred Scriptures, and the invocation of the Holy Spirit.

Together with the Provincial, Moderator, Tellers, and Chapter Secretariat, the delegates engaged in final discussions, review, and voting to approve the Resolutions, Recommendations, and the Mission Statement for the 2026–2029 term.

At 4:00 PM, the Chapter concluded with the hymn Salve Regina. The Provincial Superior officially declared the closing of the 6th Provincial Chapter in a spirit of thanksgiving to God and gratitude to all who contributed to the success of the Assembly and Chapter.
