Treasures of the Past and Experiences of the Present – Book Launch
On January 15, 2025, the Society of the Divine Word (SVD) celebrated its 150th anniversary with the launch of a commemorative volume: Treasures of the Past and Experiences of the Present.
SVD Marks 150th Anniversary with the Launch of Commemorative Volume
The launch event took place at Casa Generalizia Della Società del Verbo Divino in Rome, attended by more than 100 guests, including SVD members, SSpS Sisters, members of other religious congregations, and lay people.
The book, edited by Fr. Andrzej Miotk, SVD, along with Fr. Stanislaus T. Lazar, SVD, Fr. Crescente de Rivera (Sonny), SVD, Fr. Mark Ramos, SVD (layout and photos), and Fr. Kieran Sun, SVD (archival images), offer a profound exploration of the Society’s journey over the last century and a half.
With 50 articles across six chapters, the publication reflects on the Society’s missionary identity, its rich history, and its diverse ministries.
The first chapter, Unfolding Events in the History of the Society, delves into pivotal moments in the SVD’s history, including the life and spirituality of the Society’s founder, St. Arnold Janssen, the role of Brothers, early missions in China, and the evolution of its missionary identity.
Fr. Andrzej Miotk emphasized the depth of the book, noting that, “The Jubilee publication serves not just as a chronicle of our past but as a resource to inspire our future mission. It connects us to the enduring legacy of the Divine Word and the exemplary lives of our missionaries.”
The second chapter highlights the SVD’s academic and pastoral initiatives, such as the Anthropos Institute, its work in options for the poor, and the promotion of interculturality. These contributions have established the Society as a beacon of intellectual and spiritual growth within the Church.
Chapter three addresses the SVD’s charism and formation programs, showcasing major seminaries and training centers like St. Gabriel (Austria), St. Augustin (Germany), and Ledalero (Indonesia). It also reflects on the impact of initiatives like the Arnold Janssen Spirituality Network.
Chapter four focuses on the Society’s apostolates, including Biblical, mission animation, education, communication, and justice and peace efforts. A notable article examines the SVD’s pioneering Biblical apostolate and its institutionalization during the 2000 General Chapter.
Chapter five celebrates the diversity of the SVD’s mission through firsthand accounts of ministry among marginalized communities, contributions to higher education, and intercultural parish work in countries like Canada, Brazil, and the Philippines.
The final chapter, Some Inspiring Missionaries, presents the lives of twelve deceased SVD members whose extraordinary contributions continue to inspire the mission. Figures like Br. Lucas Kolzem, Fr. Henry van Straelen, and Fr. James Arackal are celebrated for their dedication and impact.
Archbishop Fortunatus Nwachukwu, Secretary of the Dicastery for Evangelization, officially released the book, commending it as a valuable record of the SVD’s legacy and an inspiration for future missionary endeavors.
In his remarks, he highlighted the Society’s commitment to the Gospel and its dynamic response to the needs of the Church.
Fr. Anselmo Ribeiro, SVD Superior General, addressed the audience, reflecting on the Jubilee’s significance:
“This publication is not merely a historical account. It is a testament to what the Lord has accomplished through us. As we celebrate 150 years, we look forward to discerning His will for the future, recognizing that our mission is shaped by His hands.”
Fr. Xavier Thirukudumbam, SVD, Vice General, extended gratitude to the editorial team and contributors for their dedication to preserving the Society’s history.
Attendees praised Treasures of the Past and Experiences of the Present as a resource that bridges history and mission, offering valuable insights for the Society’s future. Enriched with photographs, archival images, and illustrations, the publication reflects the spirit of the SVD’s motto: “May the Heart of Jesus live in the hearts of all.”
As the SVD moves forward, this commemorative volume stands as a testament to its unwavering commitment to interculturality, prophetic dialogue, and the transformative power of the Divine Word.
