Vatican News: Interview – Looking forward, looking back: Divine Word Missionaries turn 150

In an interview with Vatican News, Fr Maxwell Wullar, a Ghanaian SVD priest and the SVD Generalate English-language Secretary, reflected on the milestone. He emphasized the Society’s theme for the recent General Chapter: “Your Light Must Shine Before Others: Faithful & Creative Disciples in a Wounded World”.

Fr Wullar outlined the Society’s future focus on “creative discipleship”, adapting their mission to the challenges of today’s world:

  • Missionary outreach: Expanding efforts in rural areas where the Word remains underrepresented.
  • Communication: Promoting ethical use of social media and artificial intelligence.
  • Justice and peace: Addressing pressing issues like climate change.
  • Biblical apostolate: Living up to their identity as bearers of the Divine Word.

Amidst these forward-looking efforts, the Society acknowledges past shortcomings. Fr Wullar underscored the importance of recognizing wounds caused by the Church and working toward healing and reconciliation.

As they celebrate 150 years of service, the Divine Word Missionaries remain steadfast in their mission to inspire hope and transformation in a world deeply in need of healing.
