Witnessing the Joy of Scripture: Bible Study Graduation Lights Up Mater Dei Pastoral Centre
Sunny John, SVD
This year’s group included students from four neighbouring dioceses—Johannesburg, Pretoria, Witbank, and Tzaneen—extending far beyond Polokwane, where the Centre is located. The atmosphere was vibrant as graduates processed into the hall, smiling with pride.
The celebration began with Holy Mass presided over by Bishop Jeremiah Masela of Polokwane. In his homily, he shared heartfelt appreciation for the positive impact Mater Dei graduates are making in their parishes. Many now serve as catechists, lay ministers, and leaders in their church communities. The bishop expressed gratitude to the SVD missionaries for their commitment to lay formation, Scripture education, and biblical retreats since their arrival in the diocese in 2008.
After Mass, the formal program continued. Fr. Kifle, a Comboni Missionary from the Archdiocese of Johannesburg, delivered the keynote address, encouraging graduates to stay rooted in the Word of God. A representative of the graduating class spoke beautifully on behalf of the students, thanking the Mater Dei staff and the families who supported them through every challenge. Their reflections on God’s presence during the learning journey deeply moved everyone in the hall.
Over the past 17 years, more than 600 people have completed the Mater Dei Bible Study Course. Designed to help ordinary Catholics understand Scripture and enrich their faith, the program equips participants to read the Bible with depth and apply it meaningfully in their daily lives—whether in the workplace, in ministry, or at home.
A special feature of the course is the practical project assigned to each class as part of forming a self-sustaining Church. In the last three years, students were tasked with helping build a chapel at the Centre. The ongoing construction has become a symbol of their shared effort and dedication.
This year’s graduation highlighted the heart of the Mater Dei mission: forming lay leaders who live and share the Word of God. The joy of the graduates reflected how Scripture continues to inspire service, strengthen communities, and shape committed disciples for today’s Church.
