Young SVD Missionaries Gather to Witness in Papua New Guinea
Wladyslaw Madziar, SVD
It was organized and moderated primarily by two confreres, Fr. Vincent Agbeyome-Akpah and Fr. Rante Gyovani. Fourteen confreres, including the organizers, participated in the event: four from Papua New Guinea, two each from Indonesia, India and Vietnam, and one each from Ghana, Poland, the Philippines and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The program included presentations by several speakers: Fr. Romeo Yadao, Provincial, on the present state of the PNG Province; Bishop Paul Sundu of the Kundiawa Diocese, on witnessing after the example of St. Peter To Rot; Fr. Ryszard Wajda of the Provincial Council on his personal story and the challenges of witnessing in PNG; Sr. Theresia Tina RSM and her group Mercy Works on initiatives to empower women; Fr. Christian Sieland on the role of children in Scripture and witnessing among children in PNG; and Fr. Vincent Agbeyome-Akpah on the challenges facing young missionaries in PNG.
In addition to the presentations, we visited important sites in the area: the Barawagi CIS, where we met with prisoners and staff; the Don Bosco Technical School in Barawagi; the cathedral and hospital in Kundiawa; the Divine Mercy Shrine in Rukuts; the parish and the Good Shepherd Seminary in Fatima; and the parish in Denglagu with three other outstations. The visit to Barawagi prison was one of the most touching experiences of our meeting. There was a prayer service attended by representatives of several denominations, while Catholics had the opportunity to receive the sacrament of reconciliation. Perhaps we needed this encounter too, and benefited from it not less than the prisoners themselves.
Daily, we celebrated the Eucharist in various communities: with the local community in the Mingende parish, in the nearby SSpS convent, in the Kondiu Secondary School, in the Divine Mercy Shrine, and on Sunday in the churches of the Denglagu parish at the foot of Mount Wilhelm. The program also included moments of adoration and prayer, which filled us with new strength and motivation for our diverse apostolates and ministries.
Each evening, in a familiar atmosphere, we shared our experiences of life and mission in Papua New Guinea. It was moving to hear about the joys and successes that we have so far experienced, as well as about the challenges and difficulties that each of us have already faced. It corresponds well with the description of St. Paul (cf. 2 Cor 11:23-28). But what built us was our shared faith in Jesus, who called us to his mission and gives us the strength to accept the sacrifices and dedicate our lives to his people in PNG.
